Hornfels specimen is a type of metamorphic rock that is derived from the alteration of sedimentary rock or volcanic rock by heat and pressure. It has a fine-grained texture and a dark colour, and often contains mineral grains such as quartz, feldspar, and mica. Hornfels forms as a result of contact metamorphism, which occurs when hot magma intrudes into pre-existing rock formations, causing them to be altered by the high temperatures and pressures.

Hornfels has a variety of uses, including as a building material, in the production of ceramics and glass, and as a source of certain minerals such as tungsten.
