Chalk is a soft, white, porous limestone that is formed from the remains of microscopic marine organisms called coccolithophores. These organisms produce a calcium carbonate skeleton that accumulates on the ocean floor over millions of years, eventually forming thick layers of chalk.

Due to its softness chalk has been used throughout history for various writing and drawing implements.
