Working as a geologist on one of the many aid projects in developing countries around the
world can provide a host of unusual and challenging experiences. Over the last fifty years the
British Geological Survey (BGS) has sent more than three hundred of its staff on such projects,
often working in remote areas with poor communications, demanding environments, unfamiliar
cultures and differing levels of poverty.

They Do Things Differently There is a selection of their stories. It is not a book about geology,
but rather about geologists; recording their thoughts on the adventures, challenges and joys
they have encountered when working with local counterparts, often under conditions which
appear remote and unfamiliar when viewed from a twenty-first-century perspective.
