The Lie of the Land, written by Ian Vince and Published by Boxtree tales a fresh look at the geological column! Ian has taken the approach of 'peeling back the layers' of geology and largely works backwards in geological time. After explaining time and Precambrian history the reader is propelled forwards to the holocene and then after that it is all down hill to the Cambrian and beyond. Written very much is the Bill Bryson style, this is a very different but very readable approach to Stratigraphy.
